project overview

The Privacy Policy dives into topics like information collection and use, safety when transferring information, and users' rights. As a part of many policy updates, one of our goals was to enhance the overall policy experience in understandability and accessibility, to meet both regulatory and user needs while maintaining business-as-usual priorities.

contribution summary

  • Co-led full policy audit and team discussions to organize highest priorities

  • Led design strategy around high-risk global Policy notifications

  • Owned design solution ideation, iteration, cross-team buy-in, and supported implementation

problem space

Given the complexity of the Privacy Policy with its need of detailed information, we wanted to maintain a balance of continuing transparency while improving the understandability and accessibility as it pertains to different learning styles, digital literacy skills, and reading levels. Doing this would help enhance the overall user experience and is essential to regulatory compliance.

approach

  • Discussions and alignments with legal and comms experts around regulatory requirements and pressures

  • Synthesizing research on user interaction with the Privacy Policy

  • Full audit of the Privacy Policy to identify gaps

  • Brainstorming and discussion with cross-functional team partners

  • Developing an action plan of priorities

design solutions

Once getting a full understanding of contextual insights, our goal was to balance working on our solutions for our main product priorities while maintaining business-as-usual policy updates and notifications. Throughout this process, we worked closely with the design system team and our engineering team to ensure design consistency as we updated the product.

1/ Solutions for preventing 'deceptive design'

  • identifying opportunities to surface information and settings more prominently

  • developing a consistent pattern for policy education and settings

  • adding relevant and helpful education and settings to the policy

2/ Strategy and design solution around legal jargon and nomenclature

  • adding identifiable icons to the first instance of every section to indicate a definition of a complex term

3/ Summary of each policy section with inclusive reading levels

  • adding a 'highlights' summary accordion to each section of the policy

  • updating content to appropriate reading levels

4/ Design strategy, execution, and playbook around notifications

  • continuing work on global policy notifications

  • developing an internal playbook on release and design strategy guidance

the project outcome

Along with other policy updates, our team successfully launched our goal design and content solutions with the latest Privacy Policy. We also successfully released our planned notifications, and designed and MVP step-by-btep internal playbook on notification strategies.

We plan to continue updating these newly added features to further improve them as we learn more from users and regulators.

learnings

It was an interesting experience working on something with such a complex navigation around intricate legal landscapes while simultaneously focusing on good user experience and business objectives. This multifaceted challenge really pushed me to find that balance between the different parameters and brought out a lot of exciting problem solving endeavors. It was such a pleasure collaborating with all my cross-functional partners who worked so hard to see this project through and I'm proud of the effort and quality we all put into this release.
